Bale is 5' diameter by 5' wide. Vermeer made several different versions of this baler.

If it is a Super I then that means it has heavier shafts and a better twine tie and packing system. Not to say that if it is an earlier baler isn't good. If it is an earlier model I would not bale 1,000 bales a year. If you are not baling much and it is for your self it is a good baler. Check for belt wear when determining value. Also some had double spring and some had a Hyd. Compression system, with the hyd.

System being better. It don't have my book with me but I believe they were made from the late 80's to early 90's. Will correct if I am mistaken. Overall a good open throut baler. I am looking for a 2nd baler at the moment so we can finish our hay faster and then do contract baling off farm.

We currently have a 'claas variant' baler and I want to get a vermeer baler for the second baler. We used to have a Massey 1455 (4'x5.5')built by vermeer. It was OK although highly warn. However I like the vermeer open throat design as it is simple and requires less power than any other baler I've seen. There was always a problem starting the bale though, I don't know If this was because It had new belts that had grip bars (ment to be smooth) or because of a highly worn pickup?? Can any one say if the balers made more recently are better at starting a bale? I was wondering if any of you have heard of a vermeer version wich had 3 roller in the bottom in the shape of a 'V', with a 7inch gap between the front roller and the belts?

PZ balers, which were same as a vermeer in design had a version which had the three bottom rollers and it was better than the version with the traditional one roller. I am considering modifying a vermeer to be like this, with the rear roller mounted in the tail gate so the bale will still roll out the back when done. Also use an extra wide pickup like a john deer with converging augers and a rotor feeder. The JD 467 is the best hay baler I have ever witnessed (it had the mega wide pickup).

It was baling in 5bales/acre oats and travelling at 14mph with no slow driving needed to start the bale rolling!! Let me know what you reckon of my idea.

What is the best way to twist belts on the front of a vermeer 505 super I? Mine are all straight now but im told you can twist them to see inside the chamber to see bale for better and to keep hay from building up on the edge of the baler which is what im wanting to elimate.

I have seen the outside and i have seen all the belts twisted on other balers just not sure how is the best way to put the twist in it. In the manual it says it is standard for twisted belts, also it says it extends belt life.thanks for the help. I have a 505I that came with twisted belts.

The twisted belts were a problem as they would twist other places in the baler besides the front. I put the belts straight added restrictor plates and as you can see in this pics as the parts right above the big roller on each side. That done away with bout 95%+ of the hay build up problem on each side.

All these balers need restrictor plates in them as they make them easier to pull, less stress on the baler and helps with the hay build up. Here is a picture of the restrictor plates below the baler. These will fit you baler.

My 504L came with twisted belts but I took the twist out, figured it had to be hard on lacings. But that baler would eat lacings on a regular basis regardless. Jl's baler above doesn't have the restrictor plates installed in the picture, they use the holes about 6' above the crescent shaped steel pieces just above the bottom drum roller. I've always ran them long enough to wear the paint off the walls, then removed them - mainly because I think the rolls have prettier sides with them removed.

Jl - your baler must be a later I series. Dad bought one of the early 504I's and it had a square starter roller.

My L has the same spiral roller as yours above and I love that thing, it's a lot more aggressive than the one in my M. Coalburner wrote:The only way to put the twist in the 7' belts is slack off the belts and pull the cable at the splice and flip one side half over. Then work it to the front side of the baler.

Helps a little bit, but if you plug the baler badly sometimes it will 'move' the twist to the top! Don't twist the 14' belts That is why I untwisted mine, and I didn't have to plug it for the twist to move to a different place. Also I had to cut the belts off as from the factory they are longer with the twist or that was what Carter and Carter told me.
